BMW unveils the new F10 BMW 5-Series Sedan
To me, the outgoing E60 5 series was the start of the revolution for BMW. It was a big leap forward not just in terms of design, but also technology. At the time of launch, it represented a totally new look for BMW, and also technology unprecedented for its class at the time. Although the design turned off many purists, consumers bought them in their droves, and outselling the E-class Mercedes, like its predecessor, the E39 did.
Technically, the new 5 Series picks up much of what can be found in the 7 Series and GT. It also carries over the multi-link suspension on all 4 corners from these 2, a departure from the traditional BMW front strut, and rear multi-link design. To help all that new suspension show its typical BMW handling prowess, the F10 chassis is a massive 55% stiffer than the E60.
Models announced at launched are the 523i, 528i, 535i, 550i, 520d, 525d, and 530d. The range topping 550i uses a 4.4 litre V8 direct injection twin-turbo making 407 HP between 5,500-6,400rpm and a massive 600Nm of torque between 1,750 to 4,500rpm. The F10 is only expected to reach Malaysian shores in 2010.
