M3 by Vorsteiner: what could be finer? Source:www.cartoday.com Modifications to BMW’s sublime M3 normally fall into three categories: Stylistically tasteless, dynamically pointless, or an unholy union of the two. However, Vorsteiner’s tribute to the now defunct M3 CSL could be one of the finest mod-jobs out there. By Gareth Dean With BMW axing its plans to resurrect the M3 CSL, it was inevitable that tuning companies would soon step up to the plate and start offering what the Bavarians have denied their racing fanbase. Californian tuning house, Vorsteiner, has chosen to adopt some of the subtle classic cues from the E46 CSL for its latest M3 modification. The E46 M3 CSL stood apart from its standard M3 siblings thanks to such features as carbon fiber roof, front and rear bumper fascias with integrated carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFP) splitters, special 19-inch wheels and an integrated rear spoiler. With regards to the visual cues, Vorsteiner’s body kit which comprises a carbon fiber front spoiler, a rear diffuser with 3 integrated aero fins, and a replacement boot lid with that signature integrated lip spoiler. Vorsteiner has also developed a forged three-piece aluminium alloy wheel in a 5-spoke wheel design. Dubbed the V-302 series, this wheel is available in 20x8,5J and 20x10J – front and rear. As a nod in the direction of weight saving, Vorsteiner has also added a titanium performance exhaust system that is almost 18 kg lighter than the M3 standard unit. A carbon fiber interior trim kit echoing the lightweight exterior component is also offered. The overall look is clean, tasteful, and athletic without looking like an extra from The Fast & the Furious. If, however, the styling kit is not enough and you want some go to add to the show, Vorsteiner is also offering a number of tuning packages for this model. With a new ECU module, the M3's V8 engine now develops 343 kW and 445 N.m of torque, which is 34 kW and 45 N.m up on the standard car’s outputs. The modification also includes the removal of the electronic limiter, allowing the car to crack 320 km/h. Impressive stuff, but bear in mind that Vorsteiner will soon be offering another modification that serves up 373 kW. So there you have it, proof that a tasteful M3 conversion does exist…now, if they can only do something equally tasteful to the M6…
